When discussing discrimination cases, a term that often comes up is Vento bands. These are specific scales used by Employment Tribunals to measure compensation for the emotional impact of discrimination – also known as 'injury to feelings'.
Vento bands originated from the important case of Vento v Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police (No.2) in 2002, which established a set of guidelines for compensating victims based on the severity of their emotional distress. The purpose is not only to recognise the harm done to a person's dignity and self-respect but also to discourage future acts of discrimination.
