Must the employment contract be physcially signed?

Q. I want to issue contracts to my staff. They are about eight pages long when printed and I have been told to print two copies, one for me as the employer and one for my member of staff and that they should be signed and dated. I have 20 members of staff. Apart the vast amount of paperwork, this is going to be very time consuming. Can I just email them over.

My solicitor said I need them signed and dated so I must print them. Is there another way of doing this?
