I prepared these Q&As last week, as I shall be somewhere near Perth, part way through my Land’s End to John o’ Groats charity cycle ride when they go out. I’m raising funds for a homeless charity and hoping to complete the 850 mile challenge, unsupported, in less than 5 days. See the full details of my challenge at my JustGiving page and get real time progress via my Instagram feed.

Cancelling holiday

Q. hi can my job make me work if I booked my holidays, because they have no one to open the store? thank you in advance

A. That depends on when your employer tells you to work. If they have given sufficient notice, which is twice as long as the amount of holiday you have booked, e.g two weeks notice if you are taking a week’s holiday, then your employer is entitled to cancel your holiday.

However, if you have gone ahead and made travel arrangements, i.e booked flight tickets/ferry etc. and paid for your accommodation, on the strength of your holiday request being granted, it would arguably be unreasonable for your employer to cancel your holiday. If that happens you should raise a written grievance and if it is not addressed to your satisfaction, your only option may be to take the holiday regardless and accept the consequences. I think you would have a strong argument to defend a tribunal claim in such circumstances, but remember to always obtain travel insurance!

It may be that one employer contracts out certain functions to another employer as is often the case with supermarkets utilising the services of a cleaning company to maintain the toilets. You can work for two separate employers at the same place.

Pay for changing into uniform?

Q. If you have to get changed into a uniform to work & have to get changed out of uniform to leave work (e.g scrubs) does the employer have to pay u?

A. Good question. I would say - almost
