The employment tribunal claims process is currently free for the user. Not too long ago, the government introduced a fee-based claim system, which was prohibitively expensive and put many people off making genuine claims. That was scrapped after being ruled unlawful, but during its operation, it had a huge impact on the number of tribunal claims being brought. As I recall it cost £1,200 to lodge an ordinary unfair dismissal claim.
The only perceived success of the fees regime is that it weeded unreasonable claims and those with absolutely no prospect of success. Tribunals had become an easy way to make a quick buck because invariably, businesses would settle long before heading off to a tribunal hearing to defend their position.
