Employment tribunals are an efficient way of settling employment disputes. They were set up to give workers an inexpensive forum in which to air their grievances against their employers, whether they are still in work or not.
Much of the work done by tribunals may be considered trivial in the scheme of things, but to the individual who brings the claim, it can be extremely stressful. That is why, when reading the latest claims published on the Employment Tribunals website, I am always impressed by the lone claimant seeking a couple of week’s notice pay or a few days outstanding holiday pay.
Invariably they are unrepresented and must learn the process as they go along. They must not be perturbed by officious solicitor’s letters or threats of costs against them. Neither should they be put off because they have been told there’s no money left in the business and it’s going into administration.
