I’m continually asked questions about employment law and HR, and I’m more than happy to provide an answer. Since I have been posting videos and blogs as The Business Doctor, a pattern has emerged in the type of questions I receive. Holidays and time off are always a hot topic as are redundancy and unfair dismissal.

So I thought I would give you my top 10 tips for ensuring you are up to speed with your rights at work. Of course, there are many, many more, but in no particular order:

1. Know your employment status

Your rights and responsibilities as a worker depend on your employment status, which can be an employee, worker, or self-employed contractor. Ensure you understand your status to know your rights and obligations.

2. Understand your employment contract

Make sure to read and understand your employment contract before signing it. This document will outline the terms and conditions of your employment, including pay, hours, holiday entitlement, and termination clauses.
